Congratulations to the South Belt-Ellington Leader
2026 Q1 Business of the Quarter
The South Belt-Ellington Leader is a cornerstone of the South Belt community, upholding local journalism, civic engagement, and a strong commitment to southeast Houston residents. Founded in 1976 by Marie Flickinger and Bobby Griffin, the Leader began as a grassroots initiative to deliver hyperlocal news. From its origins in Marie Flickinger's kitchen, it has grown
Marie Flickinger, often called the *Mayor of South Belt,* has been both a dedicated publisher and a committed community advocate. Her investigative reporting in the 1980s was instrumental in exposing the risks of the Brio Superfund site and advancing safer remediation. She was also the first woman elected to the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees, serving for nearly 30 years, and a founding member and first president of the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce.
Following in his mother's footsteps, David Flickinger now serves as the President of the South Belt-Ellington Leader as well as South Belt Graphics and Printing. He has upheld the publication's tradition of excellence while modernizing its operations and expanding its reach. Through South Belt Graphics, David has supported numerous local businesses and organizations by providing high-quality printing services, thereby reinforcing the region's economic vitality.
The South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce frequently benefits from his generosity, as chamber activities, events, and accomplishments are often featured on the front page of the weekly publication.
The impact of the Leader goes beyond its printed pages; it is deeply woven into the community's fabric. From showcasing educational achievements and civic milestones to organizing beloved events like the Fourth of July parade and Christmas drives, the Leader has consistently acted as a force for positive change. Its editorial stance has championed transparency, safety, and community pride for nearly fifty years.
In recognition of its dedication, civic leadership, and ongoing impact under David Flickinger, the South Belt-Ellington Leader is a deserving recipient of the Business of the Quarter award.
